Project Lead
Dr E W Macharia-Coates PhD, FRCS (Paeds) is a paediatric surgeon and a clinical researcher. Her PhD topic was the risk stratification for surgery in children with gastroeosophageal reflux disease (UCL) . In this pursuit, she developed expertise in upper and lower GI physiology, measurement techniques, statistical methods and epidemiological approaches.
“Children with constipation are often ill-served by a lack of understanding of the multi-dimensional nature of this problem. Social, psychological as well as physiological aspects must be taken into account to improve their well-being, and that of their families.
Paediatric Colorectal Surgeon
Mr Stewart Cleeve FRCS (Paeds) is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon with an interest in colorectal problems of childhood. He leads the Children’s Anorectal Physiology Service (CAPS) with a clinical base at Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. He is also an honorary lecturer at Queen Mary University London.
CAPS offers routine access to physiological (how something works) and structural (formed normally) information combined with weekly multidisciplinary team meetings consisting of paediatric surgeon, gastroenterologist, play specialist, clinical nurse specialists, psychologist and physiologist. This has transformed the service that is offered to children with constipation.
